 I found a new word today: chyron.<\/strong> Emily Yoffe uses it in a Slate blog post here:

Hanna, you quote Ellen Tien’s assertion, “Beneath the thumpingly ordinary nature of our marriage—Everymarriage—runs the silent chyron<\/strong> of divorce," and wonder if those of us whose running chyron<\/strong> is saying “I am so lucky I am married to this man” are deluded.<\/p>\n

From the context, I thought it was something like a constant refrain, so I looked it up.<\/a> It turns out that "chyron" is the technical term for combinations of graphics and text that appear at the bottom of a TV screen. Chyrons often include the name of the story being shown, its location, the name of the presenter or the name of the person currently speaking.<\/p>\n

My Google search suggests that this word is well-known within the news and reporting industry, but little known outside it. We should all use it more, however, because, as the usage above shows, it has great metaphorical potential!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
