Lawrence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dude <a href=\"http:\/\/modernwizard.dreamwidth.org\/576948.html\">generally pisses me off<\/a> with his fucking stupid misogyny and gender essentialism, not to mention racism, but I do love this poem:<\/p>\n<p><em>Death Is Not Evil, Evil Is Mechanical<\/p>\n<p>Only the human being, absolved from kissing and strife<br \/>goes on and on and on, without wandering<br \/>fixed upon the hub of the ego<br \/>going, yet never wandering, fixed, yet in motion,<br \/>the kind of hell that is real, grey and awful<br \/>sinless and stainless going round and round<br \/>the kind of hell grey Dante never saw<br \/>but of which he had a bit inside him.<\/p>\n<p>Know thyself, and that thou art mortal.<br \/>But know thyself, denying that thou art mortal:<br \/>a thing of kisses and strife<br \/>a lit-up shaft of rain<br \/>a calling column of blood<br \/>a rose tree bronzey with thorns<br \/>a mixture of love and hate<br \/>a wind that blows back and forth<br \/>a creature of beautiful peace, like a river<br \/>and a creature of conflict, like a cataract:<br \/>know thyself, in denial of all these things &#8212; <\/p>\n<p>And thou shalt begin to spin round on the hub of the obscene ego<br \/>a grey void thing that goes without wandering<br \/>a machine that in itself is nothing<br \/>a centre of the evil world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Frankly, I ignore the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Id,_ego_and_super-ego#Ego\">someone&#8217;s been reading too much Freud<\/a> and return to this poem for the middle part: the quintessence of glorious, vacillating humanity. &quot;A calling column of blood&quot; &#8212; what a perfect evocation of our physicality and our longing for emotional connection.<\/p>\n<p>D.H. Lawrence really hates machines&#8230; He especially has it out for electric wheelchairs <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lady_Chatterley%27s_Lover\">[ref. Clifford Chatterley].<\/a> Fuck <em>off, <\/em>D.H.
