Instead of doing separate posts on each figure, I’ve collected some recent body mods into a single post. With the articulation mods on Marabou especially, I feel like my skills have reached a new level of sophistication — even though the results don’t look very sophisticated. :p<\/p>\n

Janet, one of my favorite LHFers, recently got a body, after sitting around in storage as a head! I seem to have a plethora of AA Hasbro GI Janes, so I popped the helo pilot’s head off and painted her neck with red undertones to match Janet’s head, which is an Integrity Toys Janay head [back from when they had a playline].<\/p>\n

Then, ’cause Janet has always been a short character, I took chunks out of the thighs and the ankles to shorten her legs. Cut-down pins and Aves Apoxie Sculpt hold her reduced legs together. I wasn’t planning to do so, but I was able to salvage the swivels at both knees and ankles, so I haven’t compromised her articulation at all.<\/p>\n

Strategic use of clothing minimizes differences in skintone between head, neck, and rest of body. She needs better hands, but I have no spares.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Velvette [left] and Janet together again!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\"janet04\"<\/a>Another recent recipient of plastic surgery, Pearlene used to be a cut-down Mattel Flavas P. Bo head on a bulked-up 8″ Little Heroes body, looking something like this:<\/p>\n

Not only did she suffer from distressingly mismatched skintones, but she also had a really large head and a poorly sculpted, conical neck.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I ditched the first iteration’s head and neck, grafting on a neck from a Herobuilders female figure instead. While I was modifying her upper torso, I also added more Aves Apoxie Sculpt to smooth the transition between bust and neck. One of my Mattel Jazzie heads matched the new neck pretty well, so I went with that for Pearlene’s new headsculpt.<\/p>\n

I also reduced the depth of Pearlene’s back. The original Little Heroes torso was ridiculously wide and deep, in part to accommodate a voice box. I hacked off the excess back and patched the hole with cardboard [just visible above speaker holes on her lower back], then sculpted roughly over it with more Aves Apoxie Sculpt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>

Pearlene’s mock turtleneck T-shirt covers up all her resculpted areas, so I don’t have to paint them! I also rehaired her with a bowl cut wig from my stash, but I left her original faceup ’cause I think it’s cute. Standing next to Sylvia [right], another of my custom fat dolls, Pearlene looks convincingly either like a short, dumpy teenager or an older woman with a baby face [like Isabel].<\/figcaption><\/figure>

Pearlene retains almost all of the posability of the original Little Heroes body. It’s nothing spectacular, since it was just single-ganged limbs with swivels, ball joints at neck and waist, and hinges at ankles. However, it’s notable that fattening her up does not really impede her range of motion. Compare to Sylvia [above], who’s pretty bow-legged. Anyway, Pearlene just needs some hands!<\/figcaption><\/figure>For my most recent project, I drastically made over Marabou. She began life as an oddly proportioned Playmates Uhura doll. Because of her height [12″ including hair], her broad, sloping shoulders, and her long legs, she appeared as a drag queen in LHF. I brightened up her faceup, repainted her hair pink, and took out her original hands with swivel wrists for some hands with wrist balls. But, other than that, I didn’t do too much with her. Though I’ve always loved her strongly featured headsculpt and her amazing hairdo, her pathetic articulation long kept me from playing with her.<\/p>\n

I’ve periodically considered moving Marabou’s head to another body, but that always seemed more work than it was worth. Besides, Marabou’s body was perfectly fine, just lacking in articulation. And I certainly didn’t want to give up one of my few doll bodies of color. Thus a few weeks ago I decided that the best compromise would be to improve her existing body. I wouldn’t be reducing my dolls of color — in fact, I’d be gaining one and adding to my diversity of body shape, skintone, and headsculpt!<\/p>\n

\"Big<\/a>
Big head, diamond-shaped torso, long thighs, small feet — she has weird proportions all around. Plus those hinge-jointed elbows and knees aren’t much good without swivels.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
\"I<\/a>
I added swivel joints to her upper arms and thighs by cutting apart each limb, sinking nails into drilled holes in each stump, then friction fitting the remainder of each limb onto the available end of each nail.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
\"Voila<\/a>
Voila — unsightly but functional swivels! I also took a good centimeter of height out of Marabou’s thighs while I was at it. Playmates 12″ figures have completely solid limbs made of stiff, dense plastic, so this leg reduction was tougher than I expected. -_-<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\"Long<\/a>
Long sleeves and pants disguise Marabou’s crude swivel joints, allowing her to show off her more naturalistic articulation without distraction. With the exception of a ball-jointed neck and ball-jointed ankles, she now matches a Hasbro GI Jane for articulation. It’s basic, unsophisticated articulation, but that’s fine for me, especially if it’s a secondary or tertiary character.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
