The answer was that their birth name was some &#8220;hippie&#8221; moniker that did not represent them, so they made a new name of their parents&#8217; surnames. In this case, <em>Gray<\/em> was a surname transposed to first-name status.<\/p>\n<p>This immediately made me think of a character who started off with a very unusual name like <em>Rainbow Sunflower<\/em> and then, as soon as legally possible, traded it out for <em>Grey<\/em> in an attempt to reduce noticeability. However, since the name <em>Grey<\/em> is unusual, just in a different way, the character would still gain attention for their name.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently encountered a person with the first name Gray.
