Pippi in a really grimy “Kitchen Scene.” Okay, I lied when I said that there were no babies or toddlers. Here is the one [1] toddler I detected during my gallery tour.

I’m disturbed by the fact that this is the only separate interior domestic [as opposed to commercial] scene on display in the gallery. I’m interested to note that, unlike all the Magic Town sets, it is not at kid level. It’s up on a plinth at adult level.

Anyway, in this setting where women and children outnumber men, the only man is dead, his head in the fridge, weeping blood. I strongly suspect that Garman intended this scene to be humorous, just a perfectly innocuous [albeit rather grungy] breakfast scene with — shock and horror! — a severed head in the fridge.

The more I think about “Kitchen Scene,” though, in the context of the entire gallery, I read it as the logical counterpoint to the public spaces largely depleted of white women. [Don’t ask me where the black women are. I didn’t see any of them. I don’t want to think about why.] They’re all trapped at home, forced to breed and care for the kids and the men. Occasionally they rise up and execute the oppressive patriarch, but then they just get processed into the prison industrial complex without changing status quo.

Yeah, I love that “heroic American spirit”!!

Incidentally, I unironically love the figures of the women here. They’re both so full of character, and they look very pleased with themselves. They’re my favorites of all the Garman figures I saw.
