I always love people watching at Otakuthon because I see people of all shapes, sizes, ages, colors, and abilities decked out in unusual clothes and showing themselves off. The creativity and confidence on display astounded me. Click on any photo to enlarge.
1950s vintage style!
Had to get the frilly shoes too…
A lovely femmey plague doctor.
Two hammy friends in cute Lolita outfits. The one on the left is showing off a purse made out of a Popple, a sutffed animal made by American Greetings and popular in the 1980s.
This person’s elaborate wig was styled by their friend!
This layered yellow outfit reminded me of a sunflower, one of my favorites.
With the mixture of prints on the left and the playful subjects like dinosaurs [center] and strawberries [right], this trio’s clothing reminded me of things that dorklets would wear.
A dark Lolita ensemble.
The circus print on the dress includes bears and foxes as clowns, on a carousel, and in other amusement-park poses.
I loved the spiky crown and the decorated facemask as parts of this fashion.
Japanese fashion considers Christian iconography really trendy, so crosses appear all over the place. The skirt panels on this dress detail different vignettes from the medieval Western European Dance of Death theme.
Another cool headdress.
Renaissance art also shows up in Japanese fashion.
Lyra got a shirt with a very cute cat on it.
Two people having the most fun possible!
An understated style from the late 1960s/early 1970s with an unexpectedly cute addition of a felted bunny atop the beret!
This person is dressed up as a character from the Fallout video games.
The local license plates were my favorite part of the costume.
These two people were attending the “Toot & Boot: Lolita Fashion” panel with us.
While we were waiting for the gates to open on Saturday, I caught these two friends very snazzily dressed but clearly still waking up.
The blond person’s dress had illustrations of birdcages, bones, and gravestones on the skirt.
Lolita styling combined with a chaotic, colorful print of stereotypical American Halloween icons.
This person was probably a particular media character, but I just loved the palette and the cape made of faux flowers.
My favoritest outfit of this Otakuthon was this person’s loud and bright decora fashion. Starting with a cute Lolita dress with standard fluffy animals and childlike print, this person piled on the bracelets, barettes, and other accessories for a highly decorated [= decora] look. The necklace of plastic Easter eggs gives the perfect playful and tacky touch! I love it!
Observant Muslimahs and other people who wear religious headdresses incorporate them cleverly into their costumes. I am not sure who these two people were dressed up as, but they sure got my attention!
