Last month I renewed my long-dormant interest in digital art using Daz Studio. Besides working on a photo/digital photostory hybrid for my dolls, I’ve also been entering freebie contests on the discussion boards hosted by Daz, which makes Daz Studio and the most popular human models used in the programs.

I like to enter the monthly freebie contests. People in the digital rendering community love to make things and give them away as freebies, whether they are digital models, morphs [shapes for preexisting models], textures, poses, scripts, etc. Robust repositories of freebies exist in a variety of genres and qualities. You can make really cool pictures using only free stuff! I like the challenge because it’s the digital version of what I do with my dolls: putting different parts together to create something more interesting than the source.

May’s theme for the freebie contest was “To Be Beautiful.” The rules are to use at least 5 currently available freebies with links, no more than 5 paid products with links, to follow the theme, to follow the board’s terms of service [no nudity, basically], to list all products used, and to show renders before and after postwork.

Here’s my first entry for May.

To Be Beautiful

To be loved is to be beautiful.

Zinsha [on the viewer’s left] and Peony [on the viewer’s right] both have physical attributes that have been called ugly by those around them.

Zinsha has phocomelia, a rare congenital limb difference, that causes her to have extremely short and small arms and hands. She also has polycystic ovarian syndrome, a condition that can lead to hormonal imbalances and excessive body hair.

Peony has alopecia totalis, a complete absence of body hair. She’s also fat.

Both Zinsha and Peony have tried to make their appearances societally acceptable, as represented by the props on their respective sides of the heart. Zinsha has tried many methods of hair removal, even some questionable pills.

Peony has tried to disguise her baldness with wigs. She has been through an endless number of diets and weight-loss products, also including some questionable pills.

They have both turned away from all of these props, however, and toward each other. As you can tell by their relaxed, joyful expressions, they each accept the other as she is, body hair [or lack thereof], body shape, and all.
