Currently visiting natalunasans [but without roseinthelibrary, who was not feeling well enough to join us] between June 29 and July 3. Because natalunasans and Gabriel have just moved into a new apartment less than a month ago [!!], e decided to focus on a stack of doll sets including an academic set for the Spymaster in his professor guise, the Spymaster’s caravan [he’s Nata’s obvious favorite, so he gets lots of sets], a combination of a lab/hospital/place of dubious science, and a library. Some pieces related to each set have been thrown in the set, but nothing had been arranged.
On Monday, June 29, Nata sat in the slot right in front of the shelves we were focusing on, and I stood around behind her. She opened up boxes of stuff that had not yet been sorted into their designated set area and told me what was in them. Sometimes she put the items into the set where they would eventually be. Sometimes I suggested where to put them. Sometimes she found things to set aside for a project later in the visit. When she got too sidetracked, I suggested to return to the initial project or reminded her what we had been working on.
Nata remarked that I seemed to be working instead of playing. She said with self-conscious deprecation that I didn’t seem to be having fun. I pointed out that labor and fun were not mutually exclusive. I was laboring insofar as I was supervising the organization and placement of someone else’s toys, so I was not playing with my own toys. However, I was having fun because I enjoy directing, organizing, leading, arranging doll sets, looking at other people’s dolls and doll stuff, and playing with dolls, and working on Nata’s sets allowed me to combine all of these activities.
We sorted, organized, did small projects, and puttered around Nata’s doll stuff for several hours. I set aside some materials with which to make Pine shoes. I also set aside some belts and things with which to make Modern Pippi, a recently completed custom doll, a utility belt. Mostly, though, I oversaw deployment of Nata’s doll stuff.
Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1, passed similarly. Tuesday and Wednesday passed similarly. After spending the night at my hotel, I got picked up by Nata around 8:30 AM or so. I ate meals at her house, in between which we went to department stores like Walmart and Target and then worked on doll projects. In the afternoon, we did a video chat with Rose for an hour or two. We showed her around Nata’s doll room and the projects we were doing, and she gave us a tour of her doll sets and current projects. Because we were just saying whatever came into our minds in between periods of focusing on dolls, we really did feel like we were just doing parallel play through the intermediary of a video call.
Anyway, after all that introduction, here are some photos of the sets Nata and I focused on. From the top to the bottom, left to right, are the Spymaster’s academic office, the Spymaster’s caravan, the lab/place of dubious science, and the library. The first set of photos shows the sets with extraneous stuff removed but nothing organized.
I started with the library. Nata decreed that all the cats should go there, so…uh…they did. These first pictures show the overall arrangement of the library from left to right.
Here are some details of all the cats as we scan the room from right to left.
The round, fat 1:6 scale cats are made of resin, and they even have little whiskers. Of course the blue tiger [lying on the rug] from K Pop Demon Hunters is adorable too.I think that Nata gave the pale blue cat a magnifying glass so it could look to see if the weather cats [purple cat with rainbow, cloudy blue swirly cat with suns, sunset cloud cat] were actually cats or meteorological phenomena.Gordito, at typewriter, is writing his novel. The Rement Pose Skeleton cat skeleton appears to be getting drunk. Some very realistic 1:6 scale cats park up high to keep an eye on things.According to Nata, Evilcat [a manifestation of the Master’s feline side] has a housecleaning business and only works for your soul, but he only takes the bit of your soul that ensures that he gets fed all the choicest tidbits.
Next I arranged the lab/place of dubious science. These photos show the whole spread from left to right.
Details and commentary from left to right.
Over in the medical area, this wheeled cart contains all sorts of useful stuff, including handcuffs, first aid kit, N95 mask, Fiendish Device [middle shelf], abacus, dust pan, and forehead thermometer.Factual diagrams sit to the left of a rather sinister one on the right, apparently a celebration of late-stage capitalism.Surgical tools and other supplies hang on the wall. The medical area blends with the lab of dubious science. There is lightning coming out of the wastebasket because I thought it was funny. Note all the pills hanging out of the drawers above the wastebasket and the movie clapboard in the drawer above the pills. Nata put in the cartoony cat/dog hybrid. I have no idea how it goes to the bathroom. The circuit boardfunctions as a Fiendish Device above various lab and technological supplies. The sink appears to be burping green go from the left well. A disgruntled mandrake hangs out in the right well. This full shot of the lab table indicates that someone is in the midst of a robotics project. You never know when you’ll need a microscope, a purple Fiendish Device, or a Japanese emergency phone!!I had to put a coffee maker and a coffee mug in the lab of dubious science because, like their creator, Nata’s characters run on coffee!
Finally I tackled the project of the Spymaster’s caravan. [I decided not to work on the Spymaster’s academic office this time.] These pictures show an overview of the set, including the small patio area. The caravan has a roof made from a poster with a purple galaxy print on it, which I removed to have easy access to the various parts of the set.
Detailed shots of the interior with commentary.
Nata’s version of the Spymaster really loves cats…and pills. The Spymaster is also a chaotically organizer hoarder who creates messes simply by existing. Most of the warning signs we found online and printed out the ones that were perfect for an evil [?] intergalactic time traveler. The corcheted walleyed cat is adorable and even funnier when peeking out of the garbage can. In the DW novella “The Master and Margarita,” the Spymaster has some very bad experiences with aliens and mushrooms, so we like to harass him with mushrooms, like these purple light-up ones.I didn’t put too much on the table when I arranged this set. Nata added a lot of mess, including the cup of knives, forks, and spoons, the container of candy skulls, several drinks, and the tray of booze and other bottles.Did we mention that he likes cats?I guess there’s explosive stuff in the fridge?!I like how the stuff in the cupboards is so messy that it will fall out of the cupboard if you open it. The Spymaster, having collected a bunch of weapons, is showing them off to Ruth Doctor.Behind the purple bead curtain and under the lofted bed reserved for Ruth Doctor when she comes over, there is, from left to right, the Spymaster’s vanity, a bookcase stuffed with stuff, and the big, slouchy chair filled with rainbow pillows that he sleeps in.A closeup of the stuff under the vanity and by the side of the bookcase.Stuff under the chair. Oh, so that’s where the handheld vacuum [pink rounded thing] went!Another view of the vanity. The Spymaster’s cane hangs on the bunk ladder.Bed area includes purple Care Bear, purple striped cat, pillows, blankets, and a pair of purple sandals that look like shark mouths. It’s hard to see because of the bead curtain, but I am really proud of the caddy over the Spymaster’s bed. I put some notebooks in there, a fidget spinner, a pair of headphones for when life is too loud and he needs to block it out, his tablet, a toy robot, and a pair of 1:6 scale socks that are supposed to be just hanging over the edge. The “Mushroom House” sign is purely to annoy him.
And here’s a picture that Nata took of me playing with her dolls. Apparently I’m saying, “There’s definitely a lot of…stuff…in here.”

Omg this is fabulous, teared up a bit. I wish I’d been able to join you in body as well as in spirit! So many chuckles reading this too and WOW that’s a lot of detail! There’s some Howl’s Moving Castle level chaotic mess going on and I am into it!
okay so i figured it out. whatever one side eats, the other side hacks up the remains of it like a hairball. there. now you know.
also thank you for setting up my doll rooms!!! the spymaster wasn’t coming out of his storage box because his space was, even by his standards, a shambles: that’s a pretty high bar for chaos.
i feel like i can get my creativity back now that you gave me a jumpstart on organizing the rooms!
rose we missed you, but it was good to do the video chat thing!
